The University of Auckland has launched a significant project examining AI’s role in urban planning across New Zealand’s major cities. As government agencies increasingly deploy AI systems, this research addresses critical questions about risks, safety and governance.
Research focus
This Lloyd’s Register Foundation-funded study, Risk and Safety in Urban Digital Governance and AI-based Planning: Insights from New Zealand Stakeholders, aims to:
- Create a framework to identify potential risks associated with AI-based planning.
- Understand stakeholders’ attitudes towards digital governance, including concerns over data ownership and security threats.
- Investigate perceptions related to data sovereignty and the potential misuse of personal data by government entities.
